How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and hunger my stomach can reach I love thee freely, by grill pan or cast iron I love thee purely, as I strive for medium rare I love thee with passion put to use in my old recipes, and with my culinary skill
This is such a fun read!! I also disliked burgers as a kid. I eventually ate them, but only cooked to the point that they were almost charred, and never with a bun. Instead I would dip my overcooked hockey puck of a burger into A-1 sauce 😂
Luckily I eat burgers like a normal person these days, and I’ve actually been to the Burger Joint in the Park Meridien! I love any “secret” place even if it’s not really secret, so you can imagine it was a favorite for my NYC visits. Sadly I never made it to Small Cheval (or Au Cheval) when I lived in Chicago, but I was a big fan of the burgers at Rev Brewing.
Have you ever had Boca Burgers? I was vegetarian for a few months in high school and that was my meatless burger of choice. I’m not sure why, because I remember them being...not that great 🤣 Maybe Garden Burgers weren’t readily available in my hometown? I don’t think I’ve ever had one!
Oh no no I still hated most condiments and toppings at that point so I usually dipped the Boca burger in ketchup 🤦🏻♀️ I’m sure it was much better eaten with the rest of the components of an actual burger!
When I was a kid, I imagined the main benefit of being an adult was being able to eat whatever you wanted every day, and assumed that would mean 4-5 cheeseburgers a week. 😂
Now that I'm free to do that, I don't. But if not for the health implications, I totally would !😋
Despite my firm foothold in the realms of veggie-land, I have to say, you sing a mean ode. I feel like I could almost be convinced. Almost. But I'd happily switch out the burger for a bean version, with all of the same toppings and lovely bun. I know, sacrilege, I'm sure. I'll be the one with the frozen garden burger at your next cookout. xo
Never liked burgers or meat in general as a kid either, and also enjoyed the side dishes and desserts a lot more! I think I was even a vegetarian for a year as a teenager. Much like you, I have been transformed as I've gotten older with a willingness to try to new places and new foods. I don't eat burgers a lot, but I LOVE a good burger when I do. I learned to make a gourmet burger at a local cooking class, which is soooo tasty, and I've made it several times. It's ground delmonico steak and chuck steak, with a bacon onion relish, homemade pickles, and a roux sauce on a buttery brioche roll. If you're ever in NY, I will make it for you! Yum! :-P
"I had no idea heaven would be arriving in moments. With a side of fries."

A-1! Ha, yes! Ohhh, I love that I've met a fellow secret burger finder.
Yes, I had Boca burgers as well. LOL..."not that great"...loaded mine with a multitude of condiments so it was kind of good? :)
